紀念碑設計成上下懸空、四方合圍的形狀，紀念碑內部地面只有一塊黑色大理石，上面用鏤金雕刻著肯尼迪的名字。紀念碑的設計師Philip Johnson非常成功的傳達了他對這位總統的敬意：「a place of quiet refuge, an enclosed place of thought and contemplation separated from the city around, but near the sky and earth.」
